31January 2001 :Gary Numan Collaborating with Billy Corgan
Gary Numan recently released Pure, which contains some of his heaviest music to date. The creator of the hit song "Cars" has changed direction, receiving support from modern rockers Marilyn Manson, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, and Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan. Now that the Pumpkins are history, Corgan is trying out various options in an effort to play music yet deflect the limelight from himself. Numan told LAUNCH that he and Corgan may hook up later this year. "We're actually planning to do something this year, hopefully. We want to do some writing together," Numan said. "Billy has actually got ideas. You know, we write some stuff together, and we actually put another band...and it'll be a complete, separate project to Gary Numan and a separate project to Billy--something else we'll put on together. That would be really, really exciting. It's the sort of thing I'll put everything else on hold for." Numan told LAUNCH that right now he's concentrating on Pure and hopes to get to the United States in a few months for a proper tour. And he's no stranger to collaboration: He did a remake of "Cars" with Fear Factory a few years ago. Meanwhile, Neil Young is the latest musician to come out against free music on the Internet. In an interview with the Argentinean newspaper La Nacion, Young acknowledged that he hasn't debuted any of the new songs he's recorded with Crazy Horse in concert because he doesn't want people to hear them before he thinks the songs are ready to be heard. Young said, "I don't like to have a record out and have people hear...versions that we don't want them to hear. With the Internet, there is no more privacy and not even the chance to express yourself in front of your audience in the intimacy of a concert that lets songs evolve. You can't do this because they immediately get circulated." Young added, "My job is to make the music, but I don't want people to be able to listen to my music if I don't want them to. Controlling the Internet is better than being controlled by it." There's no word on when a new Neil Young & Crazy Horse album might be released, nor is there any information about tour dates.

2 November 2000 : Last Nights Show at NEC Arena
I have been to many Pumpkins shows over the years and must say last nights show at the Birmingham NEC was the worst ever...
WHY ? you may ask... They did not seem to have their hearts in it. Billy said two things "Thank You" and "Thank You" they never played all the tracks on their set list (which you can view here, Tracks crossed out were not played). and just walked off early, no encores at all. This was the last ever concert we were likely to see and not even a goodbye I think I speak for everyone who went when I say WHAT HAPPENED, one fan emailed me to tell me how much he spent just to go the last show £205 ($300 US Dollars), and was very disapointed thet they didn't even play for 2 hours.

16 October 2000 : Smashing Pumpkins Set Love Story In Drug Underworld
'We knew ... that we were definitely going to encounter problems' getting 'Try, Try, Try' video aired, singer Billy Corgan says. For Billy Corgan, the new video for the Smashing Pumpkins' "Try, Try, Try" is a simple love story about a young couple trying to make their way in the world. It's worth noting, though, that the lovers in question are a heroin-addicted, trick-turning pair of street punks, one of whom overdoses after cooking her dope with dirty toilet water, losing the couple's unborn child. Needless to say, video channels such as MTV and VH1 (which, like sonicnet.com, are divisions of Viacom Inc.) probably won't be airing the uncut version of the clip any time soon, which is just fine with the Smashing Pumpkins singer.

8 June 2000 :Complete Trranscript of Break-up
The Smashing Pumpkins have published the Complete Trranscript of Break-up conversation Billy had with KROQ Click here to read it
23 May 2000 : Pumpkins Splitting Up
The first real bit of news in months apart from the tour dates and it is BAD news :

Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan called into Los Angeles radio station KROQ on Tuesday (May 23) afternoon and announced the band's demise.

"We thought about telling people right when [MACHINA/the machines of God] was going to come out, but then we thought it would be all about that and not about the music," said Corgan. "But now that the album is out, it's fine. We wanted to make one more album to leave things on a positive note."

The band will finish its current U.S. tour, head to Europe, Japan, Canada, and maybe South America before the end of the year and then that's it. The band will tape VH1 Storytellers in August, and an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno is scheduled as well. Corgan said that fans can expect more releases from the Pumpkins as well. "We have another album's worth of songs left over from MACHINA we're gonna try to finish starting in July. We also might do some additional live recordings," he told KROQ.

"It is a weight lifted off my shoulders. I feel like I've been walking around with this weird secret. I think deep down our fans really knew that this was the end," said Corgan. "If you really listen to the album, it's in the album. We brought this thing to what we felt was a really strong conclusion and it freed us to enjoy it."

During Corgan's radio announcement, fans were calling in in tears and talking with the singer, who has touched millions since the band's humble beginnings in Chicago in 1989. When one caller expressed her sadness over the breakup, Corgan said, "I'd rather look at it as an accomplishment of hanging in there and making some great music ... If you think about all the positive things, all the good things, it's not sad."

Over the past year, the band has been plagued with shake-ups and lawsuits (original bassist D'Arcy Wretzky left the band last September the band was dumped by its management in January, so the announcement shouldn't present too much of a shock to fans.

As for future plans, Corgan reports that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin would really like to race cars, guitarist James Iha would like to continue making music, and Corgan isn't sure what he wants to do. "I'm lucky because at least in my personal situation, I can do whatever I want to do. Now whether or not I can do them well or anybody cares is another question. It's been 13 years but who I am on the other side of that, I don’t know."

"It's about completing the circle and leaving things on a positive note," said Corgan. "We have really enjoyed this year -- more so than any other year that we've ever been a band. That's about it. It's about leaving everybody with a nice kiss and one more swing."

27 April 2000 : Smashing Pumpkins Talk "Love," Next Single
After making a series of in-store appearances in February and March, the Smashing Pumpkins are currently two weeks into their "Sacred And Profane" tour and have already drawn rave reviews for blistering, two-hour performances in Chicago and New York.

The Pumpkins are all over rock and alternative radio with "Stand Inside Your Love," the second single from its newest album, "Machina/The Machines Of God," which features an Expressionist-styled video shot by acclaimed director Wiz.

Despite the complex clip for "Stand Inside Your Love, the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan recently confided to MTV News that the song was actually rather straightforward and easy to write.

"Well, 'Stand Inside Your Love' is one of those rare songs that seems to write itself really quickly," Corgan said. "It probably only took me about 20 minutes to write the song, but those songs always seem to be the ones that capture something that if I work on it for too long, it sort of messes itself up.

"So, 'Disarm,' 'Today,' 'Drown,' 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings,' '1979,''Ava Adore,' those are all the songs that came to me the quickest. As far as the song goes, it's sort of a love song that rocks, which is pretty rare, even for me. And I even got my girlfriend dancing in the video, so it's all a tribute to my girlfriend, I guess."

While "Stand Inside Your Love" continues to impact at radio, Corgan indicated that the Pumpkins are already starting to sort out "Machina" tracks for the group's next few singles. "Probably 'I Of The Morning' is going to be the single," he said, "but we're not really sure yet if we're going to make a video for it. We're pretty sure we are going to make a video for what would probably be the next single after that, which is called 'Try, Try, Try.' So we're sort of 'Try'-ing to figure all that out."

The Smashing Pumpkins' "Sacred And Profane" tour will roll into the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia on April 28 and the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Massachusetts on April 29. Taken from MTV

7 March 2000 : Billy Corgan Discusses Painless "Machina" Sessions
After weathering the lineup rumblings that brought bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur into the fold and put drummer Jimmy Chamberlin back behind the kit, the Smashing Pumpkins returned to stores this week with its fifth studio album, "Machina/The Machines Of God."

Original bassist D'Arcy Wretzky left the Pumpkins in September after completing work on "Machina," and was replaced a few months later by Auf Der Maur, who split from Hole in October and made her live debut with the Pumpkins in December.

As for Chamberlin, he returned to the Pumpkins in early 1999 to work on "Machina" after being bounced from the band in 1996 for his involvement in the fatal overdose of touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin.

Despite the state of flux that seemed to surround the Smashing Pumpkins last year, frontman Billy Corgan said that the new music on "Machina" was anything but arduous or demanding to work on.

Two months after the SMASHING PUMPKINS were publicly dropped by manager SHARON OSBOURNE, the band has filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against Osbourne and her Beverly Hills, CA based management company. The suit, filed Tuesday in California Superior Court in Los Angeles, claims that Osbourne "reneged without notice or any warning" on the Pumpkins' agreement with her dated October 4, 1999, calling her withdrawal "a calculated vindictive attempt to damage the group both emotionally and professionally." At press time, no comment was available from representatives for either the Pumpkins or Osbourne.
23 February 2000 : Pumpkins Jumping Ship
The proposed music merger between Time Warner and EMI will place many of the world's biggest recording acts under one roof, but the Smashing Pumpkins may not be among them.

The Chicago-based band, one of the most popular modern rock groups, with worldwide sales of 23 million albums, has just fulfilled its contract with EMI's Virgin Records America label and is enjoying its freedom, lead Pumpkin Billy Corgan says.

"I'm out of my deal so I'm no longer an indentured servant," he tells Reuters in a recent interview. "We're free agents now, we're done with our commitment to Virgin."

He doesn't rule out the possibility that the band might re-sign with Beverly Hills-based Virgin, but the two sides have had a rocky history.

In February 1998, Virgin sued the band for alleged breach of its 1991 contract. This was several months after the Pumpkins informed the label that they were invoking a California labor law limiting personal contracts to seven years and would not deliver any more albums.

The band has subsequently delivered two albums to Virgin, 1998's Adore and MACHINA/the machines of God, which is set for a Feb. 29 release in the United States.

In an interview last year, Corgan told Reuters, "I don't work with the record company, I can tell you that. I just turn in the record."

An EMI spokeswoman says it's company policy not to discuss contractual issues, but adds: "We think Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins are fabulous artists. We've had a great relationship with them for many years, and we hope to continue that relationship for many years to come."

Music attorney Donald Passman says Virgin will have the upper hand in re-signing the Pumpkins because it has control of the group's catalog and therefore the profits to offset an expensive new pact.

"It depends on how bad the relationship's damaged but I think if Virgin wants to keep them they will have the advantage in terms of making the deal," says Passman, author of All You Need to Know About the Music Business.

Now that he's free, Corgan says he's unfazed about the leverage he now wields, with the prospect of being wined and dined by dozens of label executives eager to sign the band. He jokes that people have sent him yachts and "We'll turn out to be the biggest whores in the end and do it all for money."

Corgan is also the band's de facto manager, having recently ended a rocky three-month tenure with Sharon Osbourne, wife and manager of heavy-metal icon Ozzy Osbourne. Osbourne said Corgan was making her sick, while Corgan responded that Osbourne had accomplished nothing in her life.

Time Warner and EMI announced last month that they plan to merge their music assets into a 50-50 joint venture called Warner EMI Music, which will give the company 25 percent of the U.S. market, second behind Seagram's Universal Music Group. The deal is subject to various regulatory approvals and could take up to six months to complete.

Warner's biggest acts include Madonna, Eric Clapton, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Kid Rock, while EMI's roster includes the Rolling Stones, the Spice Girls, Garth Brooks, and the Beatles catalog.

22 February 2000 :Chamberlin Injures Eye; Pumpkins Continue Tour
The Smashing Pumpkins were forced to take it down a notch on their "Resume The Pose" club tour over the weekend after drummer Jimmy Chamberlin injured his eye.

The band, which was scheduled to play a surprise gig at the Cat's Cradle in Carlboro, North Carolina on Saturday, February 19, stripped the show down to an acoustic performance following the drummer's injury.

Publicists for the Smashing Pumpkins indicated to MTV News that Chamberlin's injury wasn't considered to be serious and that the band would continue on its unannounced "Resume The Pose" tour and record store signings as planned (see "Smashing Pumpkins To Storm U.S. With Secret Tour").

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Pumpkins' handlers had no further information about Chamberlin's condition or any long-term effects it might have on the group's designs on an extended tour.

The Pumpkins' club outing is expected to roll into New York City around the time of the release of the band's new album, "Machina/The Machines Of God," due in stores on February 29.

February 2000 : Ex-Smashing Pumpkin D'Arcy Sent To Drug School
Former Smashing Pumpkin D'Arcy Wretzky was ordered to attend a drug education program by a Cook Country Criminal Court judge on Monday (Feb. 14), according to Patti Simone, spokesperson for the Illinois State Attorney's Office.

Wretzky will have two months to complete the program, which includes four Saturdays' worth of drug education training and is the standard punishment for first-time, non violent drug offenders. The bassist's successful completion of the program will erase the charges of possesion of a controlled substance against her.

Wretzy was arrested in Chicago on Jan. 25, where she was found in possession of 1/10 of a gram of rock cocaine (a.k.a. crack).

February 2000 :Former Pumpkins Bassist Nabbed on Drug Charges
D'Arcy Wretzky, former Smashing Pumpkins bassist, was arrested in the early morning hours of Jan. 25 on the west side of Chicago after she allegedly purchased three bags of crack cocaine. According to police, undercover officers observed Wretzky and a male companion enter a building on West Grand Avenue and then shortly afterwards return to their car. The driver, identified as Tony Young, then drove off, without his headlights on, and proceeded to make two illegal U-turns before police stopped the car.

When searched, the police found drugs in Young's pocket. The driver insisted they were not his, claiming that Wretzky "handed me some rocks to hold." Upon questioning, she admitted giving him the three plastic bags.

Wretzky is scheduled to appear in Chicago Court Branch 57 on Feb. 14.

Since her departure from the Pumpkins last September, Wretzky has been living in Los Angeles and pursuing an acting career. She recently returned to the Windy City, to attend to the birth of one of her bull mastiffs, according to a spokesperson, but a rep for Wretzky did not return calls when queried about the arrest.

In July of 1996, Pumpkins' drummer Jimmy Chamberlain was ousted from the band because of his drug problems in the wake of touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin's fatal heroin overdose. A clean and sober Chamberlain rejoined the band last year after undergoing rehab.

19 January 2000 : Update on Split
The following info was supplied by Jerome Conin - http://altern.org/francesp/

I ve been reading all that story about the split, and i may have the final answer.

Yesterday i went to the Paris show, and i had the luck to go to the backstage with a "guest pass". I was representating the Francophone SP community (50 members). Once there there were Filter so i personnaly asked them about that rumour and here what Richard said : "well that s bullshit i never said that, he (a blond guy) may have said that but that s bullshit, don t worry."

Richard was really disappointed by the performance he did earlier that day on the Nulle Part Ailleur TV show, i m felt sorry for him, he s really nice.

I have so many other news, i can t beleive it : Jimmy told us that they ve rerecorded Adore with him on drums and that it sounds much better, they have 4 or 5 different version of every songs, they wanted to do something with them but they are gonna keep them. He said : like that Salsa version of Pistol Pete : and he played with his mouths the cymbals and knock his right foot on the ground. It sounded so great, he played for me and 5 other people from our community.

Billy told us that the Adore video should have been out but the director took the wrong direction so they gave up, he said that "i may wake up one day when i ll be old and fix it myself " eheh : )

He predicted that the Brussels show should be short : "my voice is terrible tomorow is gonna be tough" he explained to us how he need a shot to get his voice back "i had to use that a lot on MCIS, and i could sing 2hours and 30 minutes".

He also said that Speed Kills would be released soon as a B-side and Dross "should" be released later on.

17 January 2000 : EXCLUSIVE: Smashing Pumpkins to Split
Dotmusic can exclusively reveal that Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan intends to split the band following the promotion of their forthcoming album.

'MACHINA/The Machines Of God' is set to be the last studio album by the multi-platinum act when it is released in late February.

Speaking to dotmusic, fellow Chicago rockers, and close friends of the Pumpkins, Filter revealed that it is only a matter time before Billy calls it a day.

"Billy expressed to me that this is it - this is the last time he will go out as the Pumpkins - and he wants to conquer the world, do it one last time and go out with a big boom" says Filter guitarist Geno Lenardo.

Filter singer and one time Nine Inch Nails guitarist Richard Patrick also explained to us the reasons behind D'arcy quitting the group:

"She really, really wanted a break from the whole music industry. She's tired of how competitive it is. She's just like 'hey, I want to be an actress'. She is a very competitive person but she's just tired of the music industry. She's really over it. She just wants to do something new and she should. She should be happy."

Sharon Osbourne sensationally resigned as manager of the Smashing Pumpkins last week 'due to medical reasons'. It seems someone in the band was making her feel sick.

"Billy is a very heavy handed… he knows what he wants. Most genius' or successful men know what they want. It's his way or the highway. You either get it or you don't. He goes through personal assistants like they are underwear. I could see him being pretty authoritative" adds Patrick.

"We know her and we know Ozzy. She is a sweetheart. She embodies what I think makes a great manager. She would take a bullet for the bands she wants to work with". As a friend of both Corgan and Osbourne, Patrick assures us it isn't a major issue between the two parties, "I'm sure it's not a personal issue but I think it's probably that they couldn't click"

12 January 2000 : Sharon Osbourne sickened by head Pumpkin
LOS ANGELES, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Being the wife of Ozzy Osbourne is apparently easier than managing the Smashing Pumpkins, as Sharon Osbourne has just found out.

The English native announced in a statement late Tuesday that she has resigned as manager of the Chicago-based rock group after only three months in the job, because of problems with band leader Billy Corgan.

``It was with great pride and enthusiasm that I took on management of the Pumpkins back in October, but unfortunately I must resign today due to medical reasons -- Billy Corgan was making me sick!!!''

Osbourne added she was ``saddened'' that she would no longer be working with Corgan's ``great and talented'' bandmates, guitarist James Iha, new bass player Melissa Auf Der Maur and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. ``I wish them much love,'' she said.

The announcement was news to a spokeswoman at the Pumpkins' Virgin Records America label, and she declined comment. Osbourne's spokeswoman, Lisa Vega, was unable to elaborate on the statement.

The Smashing Pumpkins split from the New York-based management powerhouse QPrime in late 1998. In announcing that she had signed the band, Osbourne told the Los Angeles Times in October: ``Billy talked to every manager in the industry, I think, and he liked me best. And I can't blame him.''

The Smashing Pumpkins are scheduled to begin a world tour in Europe this month, ahead of the Feb. 29 release of their fifth album, ``MACHINA/the machines of God.''

Osbourne, the estranged daughter of music impresario Don Arden, has overseen her hard-living husband's career since his Black Sabbath days in the 1970s. They married in 1982.
