Frank Olinsky is a graphic designer, art director and illustrator. He was instrumental in the creation of the chameleonlike logo and original 'look' of MTV. Besides his work with The Smashing Pumpkins, he has crerated album packages for R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Natalie Merchant, Rollins Band, Philip Glass the Kronos Quartet and many others. Author/designer of two books: Buddha Book: A Meeting of Images and What The Songs Look Like: Contemporary Artists Interpret Talking Heads Songs. He teaches at Parsons School of Design in New York City. I was lucky enough for Frank to agree to judge this contest and pick the 1st and 2nd places: Here is what he said : "It was very difficult for me to choose 2 winners from over 400 entrees. there were quite a few excellent images. The media used ran the gamut from pencil drawings to PhotoShop in a way that seemed an appropriate representation of the musical and emotional spectrum of the smashing pumpkins music. " Frank Olinsky The Winners 1st Prize: chris_emerson01.jpg "A dramatic image of Billy-as-vampire done in a style akin to fine examples of the graphic novel or movie poster. it succeeds because of its sophisticated use of high contrast photo-imagery, limited color, dynamic composition and typography." Email: chris@chris-emerson.com 2nd Prize : bianca_christensen01 and 02 I simply couldn't pick one of Bianca's pieces over the other. 01: A compelling image simultaneously eerie and innocent - much like many of Billy's songs. this beautiful, hand-crafted image utilizes handwritten lyrics placed on the body to emphasize vulnerability and pain in a strikingly graphic manner. this image continues to haunt me. 02: This one has a wonderful sweet and soft vibe to it. Bianca's colors and simple yet strong composition to express her interpretation of the feeling of the song and its lyrics. Email: brighthuntress@hotmail.com 3rd Prize : jeff_stoddard_2.jpg
