How lucky I was ! It was a couple of hours before the secret gig was kicked off. One of my friends told me that she got invitations for Pumpkins' secret gig, right after their budokan show we saw the night before. Luckily enough, she promised me to keep one of the invitations for me!! Probably there would be no need to say that I canceled everything I was supposed to do that day, rushed to her, received the invitation, and ran to the venue. Until she told me about the invitation, I totally did not expect that I could be one of the 1,000 luckiest Japanese people who could see the Smashing Pumpkins' "free" secret show !! This was the first surprise. The second surprise was that The Pumpkings were going to do the secret gig in a parking lot at a small college, located in the suburb of Tokyo. Getting to the venue, we found out there were no stage or lights set up in front. All we could see was school buildings, mountains, trees, and hundreds of heads of mosh kids, and we could even hear little birds singing up above, because it was around 4:00pm yet. It was totally not like a rock concert we had experienced previously, and we began to wonder if the pumpkins would show up and do a real gig. But soon, the Pumpkins made a sudden and astonishing appearance in the presence of the small crowd. It was about 4:30pm when we saw a large truck moving towards us. Then we saw three guys on the truck playing our favorite tune, "To Sheila"!This was the third surprise. Needless to say, not only me, but also everyone in the audience had soon gone crazy. Billy, D'arcy, and James were all dressed in black, and Billy had a cowboy-style hat on his skin head. After they played a few tunes from their new album, Billy said, "I only have one thing to say to you. I-ha!!" People started laughing, and all shouted out James' last name together. I also heard some guys calling the Asian-American guitar player by his Japanese name, Yoshinobu. It sounded real funny to me. Billy asked, "How many of you went to Budokan last night?" Unfortunately, not a lot of people raised their hands.(I wonder how many people understood what Billy said...) Then he continued, "D'arcy, did you go to Budokan?" D'arcy answered, "No....." It was one of the funnies jokes I'd ever heard..... The three guys on the small stage were absolutely in great mood. For more than one hour, they played eight numbers, including a 'super secret song', "Let me give the world to you" and Joy Division's "Transmission".Those tunes were not on the setlist of the Budokan show. This secret gig is definately one of the greatest ones I've ever seen in my life. During the show, I felt I was the luckiest person in the whole world...... 'cause it was totally free! Can you believe it ???? I sawTWO smashing Pumpkins' gigs during 24 hours..... This was the fourth surprise..... Setlist 1. To Sheila
