On the 14th of may, the Smashing Pumpkins played there first live gig with all the new songs of the upcoming album "adore". It was an open air gig in the middle of hamburgs red-light district, the "reeperbahn".
According to local newspapers 20.000 - 25.000 fans went downtown to see them play. The concert was free of charge which made it one of the biggest gigs there were in hamburg in the last months...
It was supposed to start at 7 o´clock - ok, they were 20 minutes late, which was ggod, as I just arrived - because of the full trains; everyone went there... The area was crowded, people everywhere, in front of the stage that was put on a square, on the streets, in the houses, on the roofs/phone boxes/cars/trucks/trees - e v e r y w h e r e. Quite a few people for that little area...
So I arrived, and fought my way to the middle where the moving crowd was...in front of the stage. They started with a few yet unknown songs (3) which all were good... Well we all expected that, didn´t we? Between those songs they spoke little... They said that it wa sthere first gig with the new songs, that they *wanted* Hamburg for the first concert, and that it is such a cool government that they allowed them to play.
According to the newspapers, they loved to do stuff like that in the states but did not get the permission there: "...too popular..."

Anyways, then they played "ave adore" which is my favourite for now...They only played a few songs of "mellon collie..." - 1979 (live version) , tonight and bullet (live version). Then they continued the new songs... after 90 minutes they left. but coming back for the encores only minutes afterwards... as an encor ethey played a 15 minute version
of a new song, ( i doubt that it is the normal length) It was a a fast and slow song in one... (at least in my memory) Something with "radio" was in it...
After that, the 7 people on the stage left - james, d´arcy, billy + 3 drummers /percussions, and another guy... The crowd was shouting for more, but they had to leave... Soon afterwards the people left and it got less hot... with rain it would have been like woodstock - ok ihavn´t been there...
It was a great concert and I can´t wait till juns 2nd... Billy´s comment about the crowd when he was on a the roof of a club next to the stage : "Smashing, just smashing" (according to a local magazine)
