Review of the July 20th concert at Massey Hall in Toronto. After lining up for about thirteen hours the previous month, July 20th had rolled around and I was finally going to get to see the Pumpkins live! (Last time they came to Toronto, No tickets were available after about three milliseconds.) So I go down to Massey Hall with two of my friends, who got tickets also. We went in, sat down and waited. We had back seats, because we knew that the acoustics in Massey hall are the fourth best in the world. And we got to stand up! It's a tiny venue (at most 2000 seats) We're waiting, wondering what they're going to play, when the lights go down and they come out on stage! Mad cheering! I'm not telling what they were wearing, because I don't care. (Well, maybe Darcy's clothes were cool...) They start out with To shiela, as a nice warm up to the rest of the show. Then burst out with that cool version of Bullet With Butterfly Wings. They went on to play most of Adore (Except Apples and Oranjes, which kinda cheesed me) Pausing only for a five minute drum war between the two percussionists. My god! Kenny Kicks Ass! You Bastards! This one song deserves such a special message: Ava Adore. Oh my God! Billy can still scream!! It kicked Ass! It had the 'Rawk' that Adore missed. I like adore, it's a beautiful album, but it had no loud heavy noise. I hope they make a live compelation, just for that song. Once upon a time, done acoustically, beautifully, and amazingly. Shame, what is it that makes the live version so good? Maybe it's Billy yelling in that Nasal tone we all remember- Sh-sh-sh-sh-sh shame!!! Or the three and a half minute building solo, the explosion of tones. Whatever it is, this might have been my favorite song. For Martha: She would be proud. They 'ended' with Blank Page. But an Encore was in demand. So they returned, and played Through the eyes of Ruby, absolutely amazingly. They then surprised everyone when James, in a quiet voice, said "Ok, we're going to play a song by Cream." I swear, me and my friend Stewart were th only ones cheering, everybody esle are like "who?" So they played Sunshine of your love for about two minutes before someone messed up. Might of been Darcy. "That's what happens when you try and be spontaneus" apologized Billy. Oh Well, They then 'finished' with 1979. Cool. After about ten minutes of straight ovation, They come back on, introduced the band Jack the ripper, Michael Jordan and Jaques Cousteau. And then went for "one more space voyage" as Billy put it. Transmission by Joy Division. I really like this song. Maybe I'm just biased because I heard it played for about fifteen to twenty minutes. And the way Billy ended the concert was by putting his guitar down on an amp, and inviting members from the audience up on stage to replace the other members of the band!!!!!! I would've sold my soul. So if your going to a concert on this tour, you are in for a treat. If you think any song on adore isn't good, prepare to be convinced. And if you wanna get on stage, be close to the stage for Transmission. Trystan Hardy |
