After arriving at approximately 7, a friend and I hopped into a line that already extended round the block. Our wait outside included watching a large man inhale butane and light his breath as he exhaled. Fun. :-) Once in the club (7:30), we found some standing space right on the balcony above James. We waited for the Queens of the Stone Age. As I listened to their set, I doubted there was a God....no higher power would allow such horrible "music" on stage. It was pretty bad.

After their set and the roadies setup for the Pumpkins, the lights dimmed. The "fearsome foursome", as Billy later remarked them to be, took the stage. First was "I Am One". This song got an incredible uproar from the crowd. Billy played the first notes standing in front of a bright light...almost like an immortal. How appropriate. :-) The song went well, except for the band halting in front of D'arcy's solo. Then came Zero, Pug, and La Dolly Vita in fairly rapid succession. Billy made a couple quips about how there's always a scandal when they come to D.C. and "Next time we come, I hope there's still a planet." Jimmy was INSANELY good. He didn't lose a thing during his absence.

Next came the set of songs from the new album. The names weren't announced (I assume they were the same as at the other concerts), but they definetly rocked. Sounded like a disgruntled child of MCIS and Adore....nice simile there, don't you think?

In terms of fashion, Billy was wearing his trusty black suit with some dress pants that were bell-bottomish. James wore a sparkly shirt, and D'arcy wore a curved cowboy hat as well as some other fairly normal attire. Jimmy had on a black cut-off shirt with shorts.

Cash Car Star was last of the new set of songs. It had a much better beat than with Kenny's version. Same lyrics, even though Billy had promised to improve them since Halloween. Perhaps the best song of the concert was Ava Adore. This loud, rocked-up version had the entire crowd singing along and jumping up and down.

Today tagged along as the last song before the first break. It was the quiet version as played by Billy at the KROQ show. Then the band took a break while the crowd chanted "Pump-kins!" or "Jim-my!" to a deafening degree. They returned, and James made some unintelligeble verbal intro (I think it was a joke..some people laughed) for Muzzle. That song went well, and then Billy and James stepped up to face each other. After the haunting intro to Soma, Billy stepped up to the mic, took a breath....and laughed. He had forgotten the lyrics. :-) After a little coaching from the crowd, he remembered and played the Soma we know well.

The Pumpkins left again, but came back to play three new songs, one of which was If There Is A God...a short song, but it was just as good as at the KROQ show. Finally the Pumpkins left one last time....and there was only one more song to play as the setlist from the website said....

Geek USA.

I didn't know it was possible to be so good at drums. He blew me away. I screamed like a banshee....it was awesome.

Then Billy said, "One more?" This took me by surprise. He walked around to the other bandmembers and then launched into Siva. This seemed well-rehearsed until they got till the last quiet part before the last loud drive to the end. James forgot the notes. Billy arched back, laughing his head off. James got on his knees and shook his hands in the area. The band then proceeded to begin a five minute jam session with a humongous solo of just Jimmy. It was the perfect ending to the evening.

Jimmy was back, and everyone knew it.
