Last nite's show was immensely enjoyable. i'm rather tired right now, so this might not be the most in depth review. got there very late, at about 910 or so (i had class until 830), so i only caught about the last 15 minutes of queens of the stone age, which didn't really bother me, just not my thing. i was actually glad i got there late, because there was very little dead time. i worked my way to a spot in the middle-right, i was not going to even attempt to go all the way up front. the band came out and went into "i am one." even tho i knew what to expect, based on the previous setlists, it was still incredible. i never thought i'd hear any _gish_ stuff, so it was a real treat. "zero" came next which got everyone in the place singing along and jumpking up and down. "pug" followed and this was one of my favorites of the nite. i was upset not to hear it last summer on the _adore_ tour, so it was nice to hear the beefed up version. "la dolly vita" was next and u could spot the old school fans who knew all the words to this one. then came the new portion of the set. it seems like most of the setlists have 8 songs, but i think i remember hearing 9 of them last nite. sorry that i don't know names, but maybe someone has a set list from the show. the third and fourth songs were great i thought, pumpkins at their best. there was one really fast one where billy said "i don't know if i can play at this pace anymore" and that one didn't do too much for me. the one that went "everyone's gonna be a star, everyone's gotta drive a fast car" if that's not the first single off the next album, they need new a & r i think. anyways out of the nine new songs the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 9th wre my faves, if ever a set lists appears, we can see what songs they actually were. i haven't talked about jimmy, but there's not much else to say by now. he's back, doesn't seem to have missed a beat. the remarkable thing about him i think is that his style is so non-chalant, but he hits everything so solidly. good to have him back. the lats two songs of the set were "ava adore" and "today" which were easily the two weakest songs of the nite, in my opinion. i liked the version of "ava adore" last summer better and "today" was this mid-tempo bullshit version. but i knew there would be more, so i didn't fret. they came out for the encore and james started talking and he said "we;d like to take u back to our second album" and i was like "that's odd, i thought they came back with 'muzzle'" but sure enough billy corrected him and "muzzle" it was. i must put in james' great quote when they first came back tho: "we deduced backstage that u wanted to rock." great stuff. as was "muzzle." then came "soma" which was a definite crowdpleaser (people had been chanting for it earlier) and my highlight of the nite as well. probably the pumpkins crowning achievement, it was beautiful. went away, came back for the acoustic encore. it was nice, but like james said, i wanted to rock, and i knew i'd get my one more chance with "geek usa" as the 3rd encore. so they went away and came back and that drum intro, just got my blood flowing. andother one of the pumpkins greatest tracks, it did not disappoint. and i could go home happy....but not yet? i fully expected them to leave the stage, since that's how the first three nites had gone. but they stayed there and billy was like, "should we play one more?" which of course was met with uproarious approval. they bummed around for a few econds asking "what are we playing" and then they started into their choice........oh my god, it couldn't be....."SIVA." i was blown away. it was going full speed until the "all this pain smothers me" part at which billy forgot the lyrics. then they just went off into a jam, which was a liil' disappointing bcause when "siva" kicks back in that second time, it's unreal. but still, we got something special, i felt good. overall, it was really fantastic. the band was sharp and seemed to be having a great time. billy laughed many a times. including the beginning of "soma" which i forgot to mention, but he started off by singing "wrap my heart" then just kind of looked a james and started laughing. ive gone on far too long. great show, glad to be able tos ee them in such a small place. peace. david. |
