DISCLAIMER:

This file was compiled by Jesse Miller. Even though I have
conceived many of the theories proposed on this document, a vast amount
of information was gathered from other sources. For the works used in
the creation of this document, refer to the SOURCES AND SPECIAL THANKS
section. Please do not spread this document around without my
permission. Contact me if you would like to create a mirror site.

The format of this document was inspired by the Nirvana Recording
Sessions and Song List by John Loughney, even though I have changed a
few things around. For a sample entry, refer to the KEY TO ENTRIES
section.

This file includes: studio recording sessions, home and studio
demos, radio sessions, TV performances, and live shows that have been
officially released. I have not included any Pastichio Medley songs
unless they have been copyrighted (and thus considered for release) or
if there are any other notable exceptions. I will eventually incorporate
Pastichio Medley into this file when I have a majority of it's recording
information. This file does not include solo and side projects of the
individual members of The Smashing Pumpkins.

Included in this file is a list of songs only played live,
contained in the LIVE RECORDINGS section. This list only includes
originals that are only available through bootlegged live recordings;
covers and jams are not included. Note that there is a fine line between
an actual song and a jam. For example: title's inclusion on the setlist,
set lyrics, and if the jam/song was played repeatedly at different
shows. The performance dates listed for the songs are only the most
common, most available, or most noted performances, as some songs were
performed repeatedly. Also included in this section is a list of the new
songs debuted in concert; ONLY confirmed titles are used!

As you should know, many of the listings on this document are
conjectural; I am not associated with the Smashing Pumpkins in any way,
but merely a devoted fan. If you have any corrections, information that
is not on this file, or information that is somewhat beneficial to this
file, please E-mail me. Be sure to include evidence and reasoning to as
why you think your information is accurate. For some of the unanswered
questions and other puzzling aspects of the Pumpkin's music, see the
UNSOLVED MYSTERIES section.

NEWS AND NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

This, as you can see, is a new section in the Smashing Pumpkins
Recording Sessions. The title of this section is pretty selfexplanatory;
in it you may find the latest news in the Pumpkin Underground or just a
heart-filled rant from yours truly.

1) Zoom is really called Space Jam
Dave Mead convinced me that the song we all know and love as Zoom is not
called Zoom at all, but Space Jam. It seems that an error was made when
calculating the time on the Pasticio Medley. He also says that the title
Space Jam was confirmed by a source close to the band. So there you have
it! If you still have a beef with this theory, e-mail Dave Mead at
madmanmead@aol.com and let him verbally abuse you.

2) New Songs
About 12 new songs (excluding Cash Car Star and LMGTWTY which are,
technically, Adore outtakes) have been debuted in concert and they are
listed in the Live Recordings section. Song titles not denoted with an
"(unknown)" are considered confirmed song titles, noted from the Detroit
4/12/99 setlist by Christina Fuoco (Rocktropolis Online, 4/13/99).

3) The 666 Video FAQ
Be sure to check out the 666 Video FAQ, written by myself. There you
can find lots of info on the rare footage of the Mellon Collie
rehearsals. Look for it at http://www.ualberta.ca/~michaelh/666faq.txt

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS RECORDING SESSIONS:

  1988 - Chicago demos (?)
        ?* Armed to the Teeth
        ?* Screaming
        ?* There It Goes
        ?* Under Your Spell
NOTE: These are the demos for the very early Pumpkins material,
possibly recorded at Billy's home. I am assuming that this session
predates and is not related to the Sanbria Sessions.

1988 - WNUR Radio, Evanston, Illinois; live performance
        ** My Eternity
        ** Venus In Furs
        ** [possibly more]

Early 1989 - Schwa Productions, Chicago (Quentin Sanbria/Paul Chabala)
        My Dahlia
        Sun
        *C C'mon
        *C East
        *C Jennifer Ever
        *C Love (old demo version)
*C Mother (a trip unto bountiful)
        *C Nothing and Everything
        *C Snap (if I could)
        *C Spiteface
?* I Am One Part II
NOTE: This is the session for the first demo tape, The Smashing
Pumpkins. It is my guess that Snap, Mother, C'mon and My Dahlia
were recorded here, based on how they are grouped with East on the
Sounds of Turnips bootleg, and Sun was released with My Dahlia on
Light Into Dark. The guitar/bass tones also sound similar in the
recordings. The Light Into Dark version of Sun is a different mix
than the demo version. Also, those last four songs from Sounds of
Turnips could possibly be the Eye demo, mastered on the bootleg
from vinyl. What little evidence that exists suggests that I Am One
Part II was recorded here; note that "I Am One Part II" is most
likely not the actual title of the song.

Early 1989 - Cabaret Metro, Chicago; live performance
        *C She
NOTE: A live version of She was included on The Smashing Pumpkins,
taken from one of the many shows the band taped, most likely at
     the Cabaret Metro.

1989 - Reel Time Studios, Chicago (Billy Corgan/Mark Ignoffo)
        Bye June
        Daughter
        Honeyspider
        Honeyspider (alternate)
        I Am One (original version)
        Not Worth Asking
        *C Bury Me
        *C Daydream
        *C Egg
        *C Psychedelic
        *C Rhinoceros
        *C Rhinoceros (alternate)
        *C Stars Fallin
        *C With You
NOTE: This wasn't exactly one session, but an ongoing project
throughout 1989. From these sessions, Billy arranged different
demos with different songs and orders, such as: Moon, Gish Basement
Tape, and possibly Eye. Two versions of Rhinoceros were recorded:
one was put on the Gish Basement Tape, while the alternate was put
on the Moon demo. Likewise, two versions of Honeyspider were
recorded: one appeared as the B-side on the Tristessa single, and
the alternate on the Moon demo (which was officially released with
the Pisces Iscariot vinyl as Honeyspider II). Daughter was
officially released on the Reflex Magazine flexi-disc and Bye June
     on the Lull EP.

  1988-1990 - Chicago demos (?)
        ?* Chump
        ?* Jesus is the Sun
        ?* Translucent
        ?* Vanilla
        ?* Wave Song
        ?* Where's Vince
NOTE: This entry is extremely conjectural; it's more of a grouping
of the demos dating from 1988 to 1990, all most likely included on
Mashed Potatoes. Chump is said to be an early version of Slunk with
Jimmy on vocals. Wave Song was written by James.

1990 - Smart Studios, Wisconsin (Billy Corgan and Butch Vig)
        La Dolly Vita
        Tristesssa (original version)
NOTE: This is the first session with Butch Vig, for Sub-Pop.

Dec 1990-March 1991 - Smart Studios, Wisconsin (BC & Butch Vig)
        Blue
        Bury Me
        Crush
        Daydream
        I Am One
        I'm Going Crazy
        Jackie Blue
        Rhinoceros
        Siva
        Slunk
        Snail
        Suffer
        Tristessa
        Why Am I So Tired
        Window Paine
        ** Jesus Loves His Babies
        ** La Dolly Vita
NOTE: It is my guess that Why Am I So Tired is a Gish outtake/jam,
based on the stereophonic division and the general feel of the
song. Jackie Blue was also probably recorded during Gish sessions.
Jesus Loves His Babies was a Gish outtake, and almost a B-side.
A version of Smiley may have been recorded during this session.

Spring 1991 - Smart Studios, Wisconsin (Billy Corgan and Butch Vig)
        Drown
        Obscured
NOTE: Obscured and Drown may not have been recorded together, but
are grouped together because they are both post-Gish songs.

June 23, 1991 - Rose Records, Chicago (Mike Rubano); live acoustic
        Terrapin
        *T Blue
        *T Bury Me
        *T Crush
        *T Siva
        *T Smiley
        *T Suffer

September 8, 1991 - Maida Vaile Studios, London (Dale Griffin)
        Girl Named Sandoz
        Siva
        Smiley
NOTE: The slightly infamous John Peel Sessions.

January 15, 1992 - VPRO Radio session, Hilversum, Holland
        *T Crush
        *T Siva
        *T Silverfuck
        *T Snail

        Soothe
        ** Plume
        ?* Luna
        ?* Hello Kitty Kat

Spring 1992 - Soundworks, Chicago (Billy Corgan and Kerry Brown)
        Bullet Train To Osaka
        Plume

        Cherub Rock
        Disarm
        Frail and Bedazzled
        French Movie Theme
        Geek USA
        Hello Kitty Kat

        Infinite Sadness

        Silverfuck
        Sinfony
        Soma
        Spaceboy
        Spaced
        Sweet Sweet
        Today
        Whir
** Bullet with Butterfly Wings (unfinished version)
        ** Disarm (electric version)
        ** Doorstep
        ** Mayonaise (piano version)
        ** Mellon Collie
        ** Moleasskiss
** Set the Ray to Jerry
        ** She Says
        ** Suicide Kiss
        ** Tulips
NOTE: She Says, Suicide Kiss and Tulips were all copyrighted along
with Siamese Dream, which leads me to believe they are all Siamese
Dream outtakes. Doorstep is most likely an early version of
Meladori Magpie. Suicide Kiss was said to have evolved into a
number of different songs, including Geek USA. I am guessing
Pulseczar and Sinfony are Siamese outtakes, although they could
have been recorded anytime. Purr Snickety might be a Gish outtake
because it was performed live on 7/21/91, although released as a
Siamese B-side and also copyrighted during the Siamese Dream
period. Mellon Collie is an early version of Infinite Sadness, both
recorded during the Siamese Dream sessions.

Fall 1994 - Bugg Studios (James's house), Chicago
        Bugg Superstar
NOTE: It is my guess that James recorded Bugg Superstar solo at his
home for Vieuphoria/Earphoria. It is also my guess that there is
more incidental music for Vieuphoria that was unused.

        ?* Feelium
        ?* God
        ?* Shamay
NOTE: This session is what is known as the Mellon Collie Demo Tape.
Oddly enough, all tracks on this tape (except Mellon Collie and
Marquis in Spades) were pretty much copyrighted in the running
order of the tape (with a few exceptions). This makes the naming of
the unknown songs much easier. The unknown instrumental seems to be
called Groove. The song incorrectly called Strolling (Running with
the leaves/Do as you please) is actually Autumn Nocturne, and
definitely NOT a 1979 demo. The final instrumental, Ropey Lopey,
was eventually incorporated into the interlude of Beautiful. At
this point in time, Here Is No Why was called Here Is Not Why and
     Ugly was called Ugly/Beautiful.
Could demo versions of Feelium, God, and Shamay have been recorded
here? They were copyrighted along with the MC Demos. If this is
true, then our version of the MCIS Demo Tape is NOT complete.

NOTE: Before entering a studio to record Mellon Collie, Flood and
the Pumpkins went into Pumpkinland, their Chicago rehearsal space,
to run through all of the new material. This is probably the source
for many of the Pasticio Medley songs. Assuming that countless
hours of rehearsal was recorded, (including Mellon Collie tracks,
Mellon Collie B-sides, Pasticio Medley songs, unreleased songs, and
miscellaneous jamming) it is impossible to know, let alone list
what was recorded. Most of the provided entry is only the contents
     of the 666 bootleg video.

        ?* Am I Stumbled
        ?* Keep It
NOTE: I am assuming that most of the Mellon Collie tracks were
recorded at CRC, although it is just as possible that some tracks
could have been culled from the Pumpkinland session. Keep It is
rumored to be an unreleased song, or at least evolved into another
     song.

March-August 1995 - Bugg Studios, Chicago (James Iha and Kerry Brown)
        Believe
        Said Sadly
        The Boy

August 1995 - The Village Recorder, LA (Flood, Alan Moulder, & BC)
[all 28 Mellon Collie tracks mixed with overdubs]

October 23, 1995 - Riviera Theatre, Chicago; live performance
Bullet with Butterfly Wings (live Launch CD ROM version)
Disarm (live Chicago 1995 promo version)
Today (live Chicago 1995 promo version)
Tonight, Tonight (live Chicago 1995 promo version)
Zero (live Chicago 1995 promo version)
NOTE: A live show recorded and broadcasted live on FM radio. 5
tracks were systematically released on promo and multimedia discs,
but also played, recorded, and unreleased were: Jellybelly,
Fuck You, Thru the Eyes of Ruby, Geek USA, Porcelina of the Vast
Oceans, Cherub Rock, Mayonaise, and XYU. A three song encore
featuring Cheap Trick playing with the Pumpkins included:
Baby Loves to Rock, If You Want My Love and Auf Weidersehen.

Fall 1995 - Soundworks, Chicago (Billy Corgan/Jeff Moleski)
        Marquis in Spades
Medellia of the Grey Skies (with The Frogs)
        Mouths of Babes
        Pennies
Sad Peter Pan (with Red Red Meat)
NOTE: I doubt that all these songs were recorded together at one
session, but is grouped together because they are all post-Mellon
Collie songs. I am currently in contact with a member of the band
booked before the Pumpkins (or Billy, at least) that day at
Soundworks, thus confirming this session. I'll give more info as it
     comes.

Nov 11, 1995 - Saturday Night Live, NBC Studio 8-H, New York; live
        *C Bullet with Butterfly Wings
        *C Zero

        *C Thirty-Three
        *C To Forgive
        *C Tonight, Tonight
        *C 1979

March 1996 - Charing Cross Studios, Australia (BC/Martin White)
        The Aeroplane Flies High
        The Last Song
        Transformer
NOTE: I'm guessing that these B-sides where partially recorded in
Australia, then later finished in Chicago. Either that, or
Transformer was recorded at this session, and The Aeroplane Flies
High and The Last Song were recorded at Soundworks.

June 1996 - Soundworks, Chicago (Billy Corgan/Jeff Moleski)
        Clones
        Destination Unknown
        Dreaming
        My Blue Heaven
        The Aeroplane Flies High
        The Last Song
        Transformer
        You're All I've Got Tonight
June 1996 - Bugg Studios, Chicago (James Iha and Kerry Brown)
        A Night Like This
        The Bells
June 1996 - Farmer Brown's Studio (D'Arcy's house) (Kerry Brown)
        Dreaming (vocal tracks)
NOTE: This session is very conjectural; The time frame is an
estimate and I doubt that all of these songs were recorded
     together.

  July 1996 - Chicago studio (?)
        ** Ava Adore
        ** Daphne Descends
        ** To Sheila
        ** [about 7 more songs]
NOTE: First session for Adore, held shortly after Jimmy's release.
The Pumpkins functioned as a trio during this session. With about
10 songs hastily recorded in a week, the session was scrapped as
the finished product seemed more like demos.

Sept 4, 1996 - MTV Music Video Awards, Radio City Music Hall, NY; live
        *C Tonight, Tonight

September 1996 - Chicago Recording Company (Chris Shepard)
        Lizards
        Rats
        Spiders
        Squirrels with Tails
        Worms
        Worms (part 2)
NOTE: This wasn't really the Pumpkins (but then again, neither was
Eye), just Billy Corgan and Matt Walker recording riffs for the
Ransom Soundtrack. Recorded at Studio 4 which has since been torn
down. The sessions were done in one day, and later editing work was
     done at Soundworks.

November 14, 1996 - MTV Europe Music Video Awards; live performance
        *C Bullet with Butterfly Wings

Fall 1996 - Soundworks, Chicago (Billy Corgan/Jeff Moleski)
        Eye
        ** Tear
NOTE: Billy actually recorded two songs for the Lost Highway
Soundtrack. The second was an early version of Tear, which was
     rejected.

December 1996 - The New Hit Factory, NY (Arif Mardin/Michael O'Riley)
        Christmastime

February 25, 1997 - NBC Studios, NY; live performance
        *C Muzzle

Feb 26, 1997 - Academy Awards, Madison Square Garden, NY; live
        1979 (live Grammy Nominees version)

Feb 1997 - Chicago Recording Company (Nellee Hooper/Chris Shepard)
The Beginning is the End is the Beginning
        The Guns of Love Disastrous
The End is the Beginning is the End
        The Ether's Tragic
NOTE: Recorded in Studio 5, which was demolished a few months
later. The Pumpkins supposedly recorded about 45 minutes worth of
demos for the Batman soundtrack, so Guns of Love and Ethers Tragic
are probably from that tape. Roughly 30 demos for the album Adore
were recorded at this time, so I'm sure both the Adore and Batman
demos where recorded at this session.

March 1997 - Sportswriters on TV, Chicago; special guest Billy Corgan
*T Take Me Out To The Ball Game

  August-September 1997 - Streeterville Studios, Chicago
NOTE: This session was confirmed, but it is unknown what was
recorded and by whom. This could be part of the Wood sessions,
or somehow related to it. Does anyone have any more info?

Fall 1997 - Chicago Trax Recording/Hinge Chicago (Brad Wood)
        Ava Adore
        Behold! The Night Mare
        Blank Page
        Daphne Descends
        Tear
        To Sheila
NOTE: This session for Adore was ultimately scrapped, although it
was eventually incorporated into the album. My guess is that it was
decided to use these basic tracks with further overdubs and mixing
done elsewhere. This is clearly a different session than the July
     1996 Adore session.

Winter 1997-1998 - Sunset Sound, California (BC with Rick Rubin)
        Annie-Dog
        Appels + Oranjes
        Ava Adore
        Behold! The Night Mare
        Blank Page
        Crestfallen
        Czarina
        Daphne Descends
        For Martha
        Once In A While
        Once Upon A Time
        Perfect
        Pug
        Shame
        Summer
The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete
        Tear
        To Sheila
        17
** Blissed and Gone (2 different versions)
        ** Cash Car Star
** Let Me Give The World To You
        ** Saturnine
        ** Waiting
        ** [9 or 10 more songs]
NOTE: Although Adore was mostly recorded at Sunset Sound (or is it
Sound City?), many tracks were pieced together from other sessions
at: Battery Studios, Bugg Studios, Chicago Recording Company,
Sadlands, and Village Recorder. There are approximately 14 or 15
more unused songs from the Adore sessions.

May 12, 1998 - Late with Jools Holland, BBC Studios, London; live
        *T Ava Adore
        *T Daphne Descends
        *T Once Upon A Time

        ** Ava Adore
        ** Daphne Descends

        ** Tear
        ** To Sheila

August 3, 1998 - Howard Stern Show, New York
        ** Perfect

August 4, 1998 - Live with Regis and Kathy Lee, New York
        ** Once Upon A Time
        ** Perfect

Summer 1998 - Adore Tour, various locations around the globe
NOTE: Almost all of the dates on the Adore Tour were professionally
taped by the band and sometimes by the local media; rumor has it
that the footage is for a documentary about the band and/or the
Adore Tour; I've even heard rumors of a live album. Despite this,
I have decided not to list any dates of the tour unless they were
TV or radio appearances. I will, of course, include the dates when
(or if) they are officially released.

September 26, 1998 - Saturday Night Live, NBC Studios, New York; live
        ** Perfect

October 25, 1998 - VH1 Fashion Awards, New York; live performance
        ** Crestfallen

  Early 1999 - Pumpkinland, Chicago
[Smashing Pumpkins head back to write and rehearse material for
their sixth album, slated for a September 1999 release]

UNSOLVED MYSTERIES:

 1. IS STP REALLY SET THE RAY TO JERRY?
I have heard rumors that STP is an early version of Set The Ray To
Jerry. I find this hard to believe, as I'm sure someone incorrectly
thought STP was the abbreviation for Set The Ray For Jerry
(wouldn't it be STRTJ or SRJ?). Does anyone have any other
     substantial info?

 2. OFFER UP (LONG) IS NOT CALLED OFFER UP!!!
The song known only as Offer Up (long) is not really Offer Up.
Billy just tagged the lyrics from Offer Up onto the
aforementioned unknown song, similar to how Rocket was tagged onto
the end of Porcelina during the Infinite Sadness Tour. So this
leaves us with another Unknown song. Any thoughts?

 3. MASHED POTATOES
Mashed Potatoes is a 5-disc box set Billy allegedly gave to a few
of his friends for Christmas in 1994. It contains many rare and
unreleased Smashing Pumpkins songs, including: many early
compositions from 1988-90, Gish and Siamese Dream outtakes and
demos, live covers and originals, a few interviews, and lots of
     live stage banter.

As I am sure you have already guessed, Mashed Potatoes is extremely
rare; most don't know about it and those who do know, refuse to
talk. **PLEASE HELP ME LIFT THIS VEIL OF SECRECY!** If you know
anything about the box set, e-mail me. Confidentiality will be used
to avoid "Can I have a copy?" requests.

 4. LOOKOUT LORETTA AND YOUR WHORE
Are Lookout Loretta and Your Whore actual songs, or just jams?
I know that Lookout Loretta was an instrumental played repeatedly
in 1992, but does that make it a real song (see Kill Your Parents)?
Both Lookout Loretta and Your Whore were played at the Dusseldorf
9/4/92 show; I don't have that show, but for those of you who do
have it, some info would be greatly appreciated.

 5. SHAME ON YOU: COVER OR ORIGINAL?
What about Shame On You (bootlegged as Germans In Leather Pants)?
Could it have been recorded during the Mellon Collie sessions?
It was debuted at the Starchildren show on 6/18/94 along with
Here Is No Why and The Boy, and the Pumpkins lapsed into a short
jam of it on 4/15/96. I have also heard that it is a cover of a
New Wave band of the 80s. If this is true, who was the original
     artist?

Another clue one must remember is that Shame On You was listed as
New Waver on the 6/18/94 setlist, but is not the same New Waver as
on Pasticio Medley. If Shame On You is not a cover, was it
originally named New Waver? Could it be that Shame On You was re-
titled and New Waver was used as a title on a different song? If
Shame On You is a cover, why did the Pumpkins cover it and then
write a song with the same title?
